Turnip

The turnips in my garden are getting nice and plump. What shall I make with them? I guess I'll probably make a roasted vegetable dish, but other suggestions are welcome. Does anyone have a good turnip recipe to share?

I love turnips. They are on my must grow list for next year. I coudn't find any seeds to grow a fall crop at the local store or else I would have tried them this fall.

  2. That's a very cool photo, Christa -- it looks gorgeous! My Mom always makes a really good mashed turnip dish, sometimes mixing in half potatoes, half turnips, but always seasoning it with lots of fresh ginger and nutmeg. It's really tasty, and a nice alternative to mashed potatoes.

  4. I have never eaten a turnip (at least, not knowingly) but this photo makes me want to grow them. Is it weird to want to grow veggies that I think are pretty? I started growing and eating beets for the same reason....

    Great photo!

  5. Genie and Melissa,
I think I will try your suggestion of mashing them with potatoes. Sounds like a great combination. Thanks for the idea!

    Colleen,
I don't think it's at all weird to grow veggies because you think they are pretty. In fact, that's the main reason why I grew turnips again this year, and Brussels sprouts, too. I like how they look and that makes them fun to grow.

I like my turnips boiled with bacon, salt & pepper.
